Born in India, Sarupa Sidaarth studied at Sir J.J. School of Art and received her MFA at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, United States. Her work was selected for group exhibitions at RJD Gallery, JanKossen Contemporary, Untitled Space and Site:Brooklyn in New York. She participated as a Regional Finalist in the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Exhibit in San Francisco. In 2014 she was chosen for the Golden Foundation Residency in New York and NordArt in Germany. She won the K.K. Modi Fellowship and Pasca scholarship to France in 2011. Her achievements include First prize at Brea Gallery's MICA, Frey Foundation grant and multiple awards at the Academy of Art Annual Exhibition. She has participated in a number of solo and group exhibitions in India, France and United States.
"I am inspired by ornament, an ancient and universal visual language used in various cultures for centuries. Through artistic process I create an imaginative response to conflict by transforming images that reference social and environmental issues into moments of transcendence on the canvas. In pursuit of a language that is less borrowed, I experiment with techniques of painting on compositions that hover between abstraction and representation. Through mark making and the power of ornament my work expresses a need for change and explores the possibility of the new."
